Birthday Party Invitations

Every birthday is a reason to celebration and we love when our clients like to go all out and custom their events to who they are and what they like to do. These invitations invite guests to an evening of fun at a local lounge. The illustration is by Tara Hannon from Meant for a Moment Designs. You can't see in this picture but the paper is sparkly and gorgeous. Self standing menu cards, water bottle labels and the signature drink sign were just some of the details that we designed to style this event.

Top Eco-friendly Wedding Tips

We are all trying to make this world a better place and yes there are ways to be eco-friendly when planning your wedding. I love these tips from www.recycledbride.com. This website is a great easy way to buy and sell gently used wedding items like bridal gowns, accessories, and jewelry.

1. There’s No Place Like Home – Local is the hot word for sustainable weddings in 2010. From venues to menus, couples are making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and cut their budgets by keeping celebrations “all in the neighborhood”. Backyard weddings are helping guests cut back on travel, and caterers are responding to clients’ demands for more locally produced food. Even wedding favors and decorations will be sought out from local artisans and shops.

2. Alterna-florals – The hippest weddings are in full bloom with flower alternatives like sustainable succulents and DIY paper flowers. Conventional cut flowers are expensive, plus they’re grown with pesticides and have a huge carbon footprint, so couples are seeking alternative ways to decorate. Many will eschew the floral look altogether by using soy candles, fruit, and found objects for table centerpieces and bouquets.

3. The Hourglass Bride – String beans in sheath dresses are so yesterday. Inspired by voluptuous newlyweds like Christina Hendricks of Mad Men, Salma Hayek, and Beyonce, brides are embracing their curves in wedding dresses that emphasize a well-rounded figure. Many are even flaunting — or creating — an hourglass silhouette with gowns that sport belted waists, peplums, and plunging necklines. This is the year that women will ditch their grueling “Buff Bride” workouts in favor of kinder, gentler activities like yoga, and celebrate their naturally feminine shapes.

4. Wedding Planning Goes Digital – From blogger brides to Facebook-ing florists, wedding planning has become an online community affair. “More and more, brides are turning to wedding forums to look for fresh wedding ideas and the latest wedding trends. Together, brides and vendors make these forums an incredible wedding planning resource to connect with others who are passionate about weddings.” says Christine Dyer, Founder of BridalTweet.com. Brides increasingly connect with each other for advice, support, and even labor trades on community-based social networks like GiveGetNation.net and BrideShare.net.

5. Not-So-Mellow Yellow – The hottest color of 2010 is also the warmest. Sunshine-y yellow pairs beautifully with cobalt blue and violet for an electrifying palette that’s bright and bold. Or combine pale yellows with white, ivory, and fresh green tones for a sunny and natural color theme. Many succulents bear yellow blossoms, making this cheerful color an easy choice for sustainable bouquets and centerpieces.

6. The Times Are A-Changing – Saturday night weddings aren’t the only game in town. Brides and grooms are scheduling their nuptials on weeknights, Sundays, and even early mornings in 2010. It’s less expensive to book a venue or caterer on “off days”, and as telecommuting becomes more popular, guests are gaining flexibility in their schedules. Weddings we’ll see this year will include sunrise affairs followed by romantic brunches, and chic mid-week dinner parties.

7. Bright Bridal Shoes – Forget the white and ivory satin slippers and “dyeable” sandals of wedding days gone by. Bridal shoes in bright and bold hues like fuschia, emerald green and electric blue are hot hot hot in 2010. Colored shoes are a chic and stylish surprise under a white wedding gown, plus they’re more versatile than white satin and can be worn again with a little black dress.

8. Flexible Registries – The registry has been reinvented by sites like the AlternativeGiftRegistry.org, and this year we’ll see many brides and grooms skipping the Stepford registries in favor of more flexible options. More couples will opt for “open” online registries where they can request everything from charitable donations to eco-friendly housewares to cash for a down payment on a home.

9. Unexpected Seating – At both receptions and ceremonies, seating arrangements are being switched up. Think scattered chairs and benches for ceremonies, and long communal tables, clustered couches, and bar tables with stools for receptions. No more will the family and friends of the bride and groom be kept apart by rigid seating assignments at separate tables. This year’s seating arrangements will encourage guests to mix, mingle, dine and dance.

10. Something Old, Something New – The hottest sustainable trend for 2010 (and our personal favorite, of course!) is incorporating recycled elements like gently used wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses, pre-owned wedding decorations, and vintage bridal jewelry into weddings. Sites like RecycledBride.com connect buyers and sellers for free, so they can reduce their wedding budgets and their carbon footprints. More and more brides are joining the wedding resale revolution, discovering how easy it is to save money and be a little greener by buying and selling their gently used wedding items.

So I went to my pantone swatches and pulled out some different color combinations I think would be a great touch to any event. Of course, the great thing about custom designs for your event is that we can work out any colors to create the feel and look of your event.

Spring has sprung! It is so wonderful to be outside on a bright, sunny day. If you’re looking for something fun to do while outside this weekend, try painting pots! Whether it’s just a bold color or a design, painted pots will spruce up the outside of your house. It is very relaxing and fun to be outside while painting. Clay pots range from $4 to $15 from Home Depot depending on the size. Patio paint is recommended by the experts. A 2 oz. bottle is about $2. Happy Painting!

Happy Cinco de Mayo

I love Mexican food and what a better day than to pull out the tortilla maker and whip up some fresh guacamole. What are you doing today to Celebrate?

Chunky Guacamole
prep time: 15 min.

Ingredients

4 ripe avocados
3 limes, juiced
1/2 red onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
2 serrano chiles, sliced thinly
1 big handful fresh cilantro, finely chopped
Extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Halve and pit the avocados. Scoop out the flesh with a tablespoon into a mixing bowl. Mash the avocados with a fork, leaving them somewhat chunky. Add the remaining ingredients, and fold everything together to gently mix. Lay a piece of plastic wrap right on the surface of the guacamole so it doesn't brown and refrigerate 1 hour before serving.

This past weekend I de-stressed and baked a cake. I'm not sure what I was thinking on this one...A Chocolate Mouse Cake. It had 4 layers of deliciousness. It was the most difficult cake I've ever made but oh was it the best cake. As you can see I saved you a piece but its going fast.

Strawberry Fields Forever...

A recap from the NACE Uncorked! Unplugged event on March 15, 2010. We designed all the details for this table design which won The Best Overall Tabletop Award. We designed the LP menu cards, favor boxes, matching favor tags and the paper strawberries for the centerpiece.

Event details: Aisle Style Bridal Show recap

A couple weeks ago we showcased our designs at the Baltimore Magazine Aisle Style Bridal Show. It was great to meet so many excited brides and chat about the details on this tablescape. The finished creation all started with an inspiration board. We designed the favor boxes with pink rosettes on the top, menu tags that were tied around the napkins, a circular table number, a bride and groom chair sign and a matching invitation suite.

I love pulling together inspiration from our clients (in this case from the table designer Bradshaw Styling) that capture the feel of their event. How are you capturing the look and feel of your next event?

NACE uncorked, unplugged part 2

There were so many lovely tables this year at The Nace uncorked, unplugged event but two were among our favorites because we sponsored them with our lovely paper designs.

The first table by Bradshaw Styling and Chef's Expressions was "Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles. We designed the lovely LP standing menu cards, favor boxes and tags, strawberry napkin tags, and the table vendor signs.

The Second table by Amy from Crimson and Clover Floral and Linnyette from Premiere Event Management. The theme for this table: "Paint it Black" by Rolling Stones. I love the door hung from this bed of moss and upside down roses. Paint cans filled with red lush roses in the middle of the table. We designed the record belly bands and the paint can labels.

5 Tips for Branding your events, weddings and parties.
(These tips can be applied to your business too.)

Building a strong brand is not just for large corporations or small businesses. An effective brand can create the mood and atmosphere of your celebration. Below are 5 ways you can brand your next event. For more solutions give us a call!

1. Color
Color stimulates various emotions and carries with it subconscious associations to various elements and characteristics of an event.

2. Design element or event logo
A simple monogram, motif or graphic pattern can be used on all the details and elements for your event. The design can be lightly introduced in the save the dates and through to the menu cards, programs, seating charts, embroidered designs, gobos and favors just to mention a few.

3. Emotion
Events are more than just creating an event from an inspiration board. Celebrations are about the emotions and feeling you want your guests to experience. Creating and carrying the atmosphere in your venue, food, stationery, flowers, and attire is key to creating that mood for your guests.

4. Consistency
To build a successful brand you need to make it memorable. How do you make people remember things? You repeat them. Using some of the elements above to create consistency is key to branding your event. Having a designer create the details of your event brings us to the next tip.

5. Uniqueness
Using all of the above elements to brand your celebration will only get you so far because there is another important fact to consider, uniqueness. The celebration is held to celebrate a person, couple or special moment. Creating a celebration that truly reflects the events core reason for celebrating is truly branding an event.

For those of you in the DC area. This exhibition at the National Gallery of Art is quite interesting. It's all about how the title page. This exhibition will be at the National Gallery until May 21, 2010

"As the printed book emerged in the 15th century, its early design mimicked that of the manuscript. Printers, however, soon developed their own forms and techniques. One of their most obvious innovations—the addition of a title page—puts information about the production of the work right up front, at the beginning of the book. (In a manuscript, such information is found in the colophon at the end.) Over time, printers not only included more information on the title page but also presented it within carefully wrought designs.
Presenting select examples of early books of the 15th century through modern books of the late 19th century, this exhibition traces the development of the title page as its role expanded and new printing technologies impacted its design."

We appreciate our customers and those who have supported our business. Every year we do something special for those who have contributed to keeping our business going. This year we've collaborated with an artist to create a one of kind valentine's day cards. Artist Tara Hannon with Meant for a Moment Designs drew up some very cool drawings that inspired the design of our 4 cards and packaging. "Hearts for you".

Tara Hannon, the creative artist of Meant for a Moment Designs, has been illustrating since she could hold a pencil. She began Meant for a Moment in 2008 and since then has illustrated hundreds of whimsical customized drawings for prints, books, and gifts. She is a hopeless romantic and is so excited to spread the love this Valentines day. For more about Tara, visit her website.

Recycled Favor Tags

Loving these 100% recycled GP plantable heart tags from Green Post on Etsy. Each tag is unique and individually made with a screen and then shaped and hand-cut into a heart and measures approx. 3" in circumference. They have a quilted like appearance and the seeds are visible giving the tags loads of visual appeal! They have been triple pressed, hot pressed and dried indoors to preserve the color. All the content is 100% recycled.

Red Velvet Woopies Pies

Looking for something different to make your loved ones this Valentines Day? Instead of red velvet cupcakes try red velvet woopies pies.

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

1 ounce semisweet chocolate, chopped
1/2 ounce milk chocolate, chopped
12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup sour cream
2 large eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon red food coloring
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Filling:

8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise and seeds scraped

Directions

Make the cookies: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine the semisweet and milk chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave at 50 percent power until melted, about 2 minutes. Whisk until smooth.

Whisk the melted butter, sour cream, eggs, vinegar, vanilla and food coloring in a bowl until combined. In another bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in four equal batches, whisking each batch completely before adding the next. Stir in the melted chocolate.

Scoop heaping tablespoonfuls of batter onto the prepared baking sheets and smooth the tops with a damp finger. Bake until the cookies spring back when lightly pressed, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes on the baking sheets, then transfer to racks to cool completely.

Meanwhile, make the filling: Beat the cream cheese and butter with a mixer until smooth. Beat in the confectioners' sugar and vanilla seeds. Sandwich a heaping tablespoonful of filling between 2 cookies; repeat with the remaining cookies and filling. Refrigerate 30 minutes before serving.

tips for addressing your envelopes

I'm always asked about addressing envelopes...below are some tips for social titles when addressing the outer and inner envelopes.

Full names with the appropriate titles should always be written on the outer envelope. The inner envelope names/titles will differ depending on the formality of the event.

Social Titles

Married couple - formal:

{outer} Mr. and Mrs. Micah Cohen
{inner} Mr and Mrs. Cohen

Married couple - informal:

{outer} Loren and Dina Nelson
{inner} Loren and Dina

Married couple formal/Children under 18 living at home:

One place I love is the beach. I grew up in California and only 5 minutes walking distance from the crashing waves and sandy beaches. This holiday season I was looking for ways to incorporate my love for the beach and when I opened coastal living this wreath just popped out at me. Love love love it! Last Monday the March of Dimes hosted their Signature Chefs Auction at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel in downtown Baltimore. It was a huge success and with chefs from all over Baltimore creating their best dish for all to sample. We designed the invitations for this years big event along with the program and many other details. Thanks to all those who came out to support the cause. The money raised supports healthy babies.
